It seems like all the pieces are finally coming together. Well, the pieces of the Avengers movie puzzle, that is. Ever since Robert Downey Jr. cameoed as Tony Stark in The Incredible Hulk, an Avengers movie finally felt like a near future reality. But any comic fan will tell you that you can’t have a movie about the Avengers without giving the other members room to shine in their own flicks. Marvel anticipated those cries and subsequently answered our prayers and greenlit a Thor movie and Captain America movie. Yeah!
While the Thor movie has been lingering in negotiations over who will direct (apparently they’re talking to Kenneth Brannagh) a director for the Captain America movie has been confirmed. Joe Johnston will helm the film about the puny recruit turned super-soldier.
Johnston, who most people may not know by name has been a driving force in Hollywood for nearly 30 years. He’s worked closely with George Lucas having done art direction and visual effects for the Star Wars trilogy and Raiders of the Lost Ark (for which he won an Academy Award).
As director, Johnston has helmed over Jumanji, Hildalgo, Jurassic Park III, and the upcoming film, The Wolf Man, starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.
Captain America is a very beloved comic book character and an icon in American culture. So it would seem that anyone directing the film would certainly have his work cut out for him. I think Johnston has proved himself many times over and I think if this goes well people may know his name.
